Third Round
Simon Davies and his youth team took centre stage at The Deva Stadium this evening with the prize of an away trip to either White Hart Lane or the St. Mary's Stadium on offer for winner of this FA Youth Cup third round tie against York City. City had already dismissed Curzon Ashton and Marine prior to tonight's match and their steady progress this season is testament to the quality of the set up at The Deva Stadium, a set up that over the past couple of seasons has developed talent such as the likes of Kevin Roberts, Paul McManus, Paul Rutherford and Glenn Rule. The opening period of the game saw both sides have several speculative attempts at goal. The first real chance went to City however, where an acute angled cross from McManus on the quarter hour mark that narrowly failed to connect with a blue shirt. City continued to pile on the pressure against the Minstermen and the paid a dividend as James Gregory shot sweet from close range and past Mcdonald to put the young Blues in the lead. Again the game reverted to stalemate with even chances to both sides but in all honesty it was Chester City who looked the more dangerous with McManus playing a key role with several meaningful runs along the flank to get crosses in and also took a number of half chances himself. For the opposition, Emmerson and Johnson looked the more likely to pose a problem but a solid Blues defence kept the threat level at bay. Skipper Glenn Rule came close prior to break when he found a free kick taken by McManus, his shot was dealt with however by McDonald. HT : Chester City U18 1 York City U18 0 City came out with all guns blazing in the second period and some good build up play and pressure exerted on York led to a second City goal. An Andy Mitchell cross was ferried on by James Gregory who found an unmarked Paul McManus. The young prospect shot low and into the bottom right of his adversaries net to double the Blues advantage. Glenn Rule came close on the 68th minute when his effort forced a save from Mcdonald but in reality it was wide of the upright in any event. With a quarter of an hour to go, Caernarfon born James Owen struck a ball which produced an impressive save from the York shotstopper. As the game drew to a close, York did little to threaten the Chester goal and an 89th minute goal by Lloyd Ellams sealed it for City who by the end of the game learned that it will be Tottenham Hotspur they encounter in the fourth round.
