The club narrowly missed promotion under Ken Roberts in 1970/71.

New signings included Alan Groves, Dave Kennedy, Dave Pountney and Brian Woodall and we lost just two of our first 12 League games, going top of the table after a 5-0 victory over Grimsby Town.

Kevin McHale arrived from Crewe and Eddie Loyden returned from Barnsley, forming a fine goalscoring partnership with Alan Tarbuck.

A 2-1 win over leaders Notts County heralded a run that revived the fading promotion challenge but Eddie Loyden missed a penalty in the 1-1 draw against York City on Easter Monday and York pipped us to promotion by a point.
